The new universal 17-1003 serves as an interface between
towing vehicle and trailer.

- It supports multiplexed systems (multiple functions transmit over one line)
/ PWM (pulse-width modulation).
- It can be used with BOTH LED and bulb lighting.
- As a rough guide it can be used on all non CANBUS 12V car systems,
Euro cars with CANBUS pre 1995, and all other car makes with CANBUS pre 2000.

Why Use The 17-1003 Instead of Doing Your Own Wiring?

There are a number of vehicles that either have older style electrical systems that do
not require vehicle specific wiring, or vehicle specific solutions are not available but
there is still a required level of electrical system protection required when towing.

The Erich Jaeger Universal wiring solution provides features and benefit far in excess
of any other universal wiring solution on the market while providing the reassurance
of having been manufactured in Europe by the worlds leading supplier of electrical
connections for towing.

The Erich Jaeger Universal Wiring solution provides the following features
and benefits:

Electrical System Protection

New Zealand and Australia have a unique wiring configuration where we have a single
tail light feed to the trailer lights, all vehicle systems are designed and rated to have
two feeds, left and right, accordingly we double the designed current draw through the
tail light circuit. Then in addition trailer manufactures install additional tail and marker
lights increasing the load even further.

The 17-1003 module protects a vehicles electrical system from any excess current draw,
or possible short circuit. It provides engineered protection across all channels effectively
separating the two electrical systems for maximum protection.

• Supports 4 x 21W on Brake light circuit
• 2 x 21W on all other circuits.
• The kit also has reverse polarity protection

Pulse width Modulation (PWM)

A number of vehicles use this system which is most commonly identified when
an installer identifies a voltage that fluctuates to less than 12V (it can vary as low as 3v)
in the lighting circuits. This makes fitting a traditional simple solution not possible as
there is insufficient voltage to drive the trailer lighting. The 17-1003 kit can be used
on these systems due to the specialised capabilities built into the module.

PWM can also be identified by the use in the vehicle of a single bulb for multiple
functions such a tail and brake on the same circuit.

CANBUS Compatibility

Newer CANBUS vehicles require complex vehicle specific solutions due to the level
of integration the vehicle requires when towing. This is achieved using model specific
software and modules to activate comfort and critical safety features.
However earlier versions of CANBUS were effectively just a digital switch that had
very little or no integration into the vehicle systems. As a rough guide CANBUS
systems for Euro vehicles pre 1995, and other makes pre 2000 can use
the 17-1003 universal kit.

The kit when installed correctly is not seen as a parasitic current draw thus does not
cause fault generation on these earlier vehicles.

It is recommended that when available, a vehicle specific kit is fitted to CANBUS equipped
vehicles that are after or around these dates.

LED Compatibility

As most new trailers use LED lights it is very important that any kit is LED compatible
to ensure correct operation without the need of a resistor pack and avoiding twinkling
of the trailer lights etc. The 17-1003 suits LED lighting.

As previously mentioned, as a rough guide the 17-1003 should suit CANBUS and non CANBUS
systems for Euro vehicles pre 1995, and other makes pre 2000. From our research we have
determined that it will suit all common 12V small passenger vehicles excluding the below
listed models before these dates. If you find any other models that it will NOT suit
please let us know details so that we can update the list.
